John Neubauer (70), innovator and master teacher of Tai Chi Yoga, began practicing hatha yoga daily in 1973 after friends recommended that it might help ease debilitating leg cramps from playing college basketball. It actually cured the leg cramps within a few weeks of beginning and never returned.
John learned yoga from Maja Trigg (Louisville, Kentucky) and Swami Vishnudevananda's camp (the Bahamas). He was also certified by Ms. Trigg in 1974 to teach yoga. His yoga was additionally influenced by the writings of B.K.S. Iyengar.
He first learned tai chi (Wu-style) from Kevin Akers (Louisville) and Gia-Fu Feng (in the French Alps). His tai chi was later influenced by Master Cheng Lu (Yang-style, Salt Lake City) and Master Alfred Huang (Wu-style, Maui).
John started teaching yoga in 1974, taking over ownership and management for a few years of Yoga East in Louisville, Kentucky. He began practicing tai chi daily in 1975. He blended the two into a single art form in 1977, which he has practiced and taught since then..
His daily practice consists of a 75-minute morning routine and a 30-minute evening routine of Tai Chi Yoga, meditation, scriptures and prayer. In the past 38 years, he has only missed a few days of practice due to hospitalizations.
He has instructed thousands around the world in Tai Chi Yoga over the past 38 years. For example in 1977 he taught students in France, Germany, and Denmark as well as a ballet company in Munich. In the 1980's he was invited to teach at the YMCA, the YWCA, and The Principal Financial Group in Des Moines, Iowa.
Since the 1990's he has taught corporate groups on-site, retreats, and private individuals. His students have included dancers, athletes, corporate executives, laborers, and people of all ages and shapes. He has also instructed and certified those seeking to teach Tai Chi Yoga.
In 1976 John produced and published a 2-record teaching album called "Yoga in Nature". In 1999 he produced and published "Tai Chi Yoga - A Unique Video Package". In 2009 he recorded "Power of Tai Chi Yoga", a 12 week audio lesson plan for weight-loss and anti-aging. That same year he filmed "My Daily Tai Chi Yoga Routines", a collection of the four daily routines he practices each week. In 2011 he authored and published a 100 page eBook: "TAI CHI YOGA: Ancient Principles for Modern-Day Healing, Living, and Weight-Loss".
John's development and practice of Tai Chi Yoga has been greatly enhanced by his study of Chinese Taoism. He was introduced to Taoism by Gary Schmalfeldt (Des Moines, Iowa). His Taoism study was most profoundly affected by the "Tao Te Ching" translation of Gia-Fu Feng.
John was born (1948) and raised on a farm outside Pontiac, Illinois. He was a high-school valedictorian (Saunemin, Illinois). He graduated with honors and has an accounting degree from Drake University in Des Moines (1970).
His professional career has been a blend of business developments and public service ventures. He has been recipient of multiple Community Betterment awards by the Iowa Governor's Office and has been showcased in The Journal of Accountancy, The Christian Science Monitor, Success Magazine, and many feature stories in The Des Moines Register, the Business Record (Des Moines), and radio and television interviews.
He continues to teach private lessons to select students. He is a high priest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is happily married to Tinatin Neubauer.
